Litter Cleanup SAfety Guidelines

Do

Pick up litter during daylight hours
Work in teams on the same side of the road
Walk facing traffic and keep a three foot distance from the shoulder of the road
Drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks
Wear highly visible clothing or safety vests
Wear appropriate clothing for the location and weather
Be careful when navigating different terrains and surfaces
Carry a cellphone with you
Wear sunscreen and insect repellent
Use hand sanitizer after the cleanup
Have access to a first-aid kit
Communicate frequently with your team
Stay alert

Do Not

Do not pick up litter during low light or low visibility time periods
Do not pick up litter during inclement weather or during heat advisories
Do not pick up litter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs that may alter mental state, judgement, or balance.
Do not pick up litter in the roadway
Do not pick up unsafe items
Do not wear headphones or use technology that will be distracting
Do not try and move heavy items alone
Do not overfill bags
